How NAMI-ACS has helped the community
We are excited about our plans to implement many of the NAMI Signature Education Programs and other NAMI Programs to meet our local community's mental health needs. With caregiver programs in English and Mandarin established, we want to reach out to our Spanish speaking community.
In addition, we are focusing on implementing NAMI programs with consumer participation and those to meet ethnic and cultural needs of our community.
As for our consumers, we are getting exceptional results with our IOOV program in hospital settings. Following is a comment from clinical staff in the Occupational Therapy unit at John George Psychiatric Hospital in San Leandro."The patients left inspired. The best two comments that I heard during the presentation was 'I want what she has' and another patient making a comment after the presenter said 'you are smart and you can have recovery'. This was after seeing a series of pictures of historical people who had mental illness. The patient I am referring to was one that has attended college but had a relapse. She commented that it made her feel like she had 'hope'. There was great dialogue between the patients and presenters. The presenters were wonderful! They said the right things that motivated our patients to take ownership of their illness. The comments on the evaluation forms reflect the great outcome of this group."
